SIGNAL SYSTEM INSTALLATIONS
In pursuit of safety goals and increasing the number of trains on the same railway line, a system of signals is necessary to give march orders and information to the train engine driver.
SCMT (sistema controllo marcia treno) and SSC (sistema supporto condotta) are two systems those aim is optimising safety levels for people (passengers, staff and third parties).
The SSC system is a safety system for train running that provides the train driver with an auxiliary. It checks the permissible train speed compared to the maximum line speed and signal status. Whenever the instantaneous speed is too high, the system intervenes via a braking command.
There’s no lateral signal system on classic lines neither on AC/AV lines. A distance system linked to a center, called Radio Block Center (RBC) settles the train direction. It allows to know the train’s position on the tracks and broadcast to the cockpit the train’s route, the line’s conditions, the distances from and to the stations and crossroads, when it’s necessary to decelerate. All of this thanks to circuit binaries and boas on the ground and radio link within trains called GSM-R (Global System Mobile for Railway applications). Through an interface the machine operator receives all the direction instructions on board.
